What is sublimation printing?
Sublimation is a printing process where dye is converted from a solid to a gas and infused directly into the fabric fibers under heat and pressure. Unlike screen printing and other heat applied graphics that sit on top of the fabric, the result is a print that becomes part of the fabric itself. Sublimation produces vibrant, all-over color with an ultra-soft hand feel and virtually zero texture.
It's the go-to method for all-over printed apparel, performance wear, custom team uniforms and jerseys, and designs that require full-coverage where you want edge-to-edge color with no print area limitations.
What fabrics work with sublimation printing?
Sublimation works only on 100% polyester, high-poly blends and polymer-coated hard goods. The dye bonds with polyester fibers chemically and doesn't adhere to natural fibers like cotton.
For apparel, this means sublimation is the right call for performance wear, athletic jerseys, moisture-wicking tees, and sports uniforms which are typically polyester-based. On 100%. cotton garments, sublimation will not produce lasting, vivid results. If your design needs to go on cotton, we'll recommend screen printing, DTF, or DTG instead.
What's the difference between sublimation and DTF or screen printing?
- Screen printing uses ink on top of the fabric. This is best for high-quantity orders with limited colors on standard tees.
- DTF transfers ink onto virtually any fabric with a heat press. It’s a versatile option with no minimum and produces a soft hand feel.
- Sublimation infuses dye into the polyester fibers. This produces the softest hand feel, supports all-over coverage, and is ideal for performance wear and custom team uniforms and jerseys.
If you want a full-coverage, edge-to-edge design with vibrant color and a soft feel that holds up through athletic use, sublimation is the way to go. If your garment is cotton or a lower poly-blend, try screen printing, DTF, or DTG printing.
Can sublimation print all-over designs, including seams?
Yes! This is one of sublimation's advantages. There are no print area restrictions the way there are with screen printing or DTF printing. Because the entire garment blank is printed before being sewn together, designs can run edge to edge, across seams, and fully cover the front, back, and sleeves continuously. This makes sublimation the standard production method for custom team jerseys, all-over print hoodies, and full-coverage performance apparel.
What colors are possible with sublimation?
Sublimation is full CMYK color. Any color, gradient, photograph, or complex illustrated design is achievable. There are no per-color setup fees and no color count limits. This is why sublimation is preferred for intricate uniform designs with gradients, team colors, player names, and numbers all in one piece.
One important note: sublimation inks are translucent, which means the base fabric color affects the final print. Sublimation is designed for white or very light-colored fabrics. Sublimation on darker fabrics produce dull designs
How durable is sublimation printing?
Because the dye is infused into the fiber rather than sitting on top of it, sublimation prints are extraordinarily durable. There is nothing to crack, peel, or fade from washing. The print degrades only as the fabric degrades.
Sublimated performance wear, jerseys, and uniforms can withstand hundreds of wash cycles and the physical demands of athletic use without any degradation to the graphic. If you need the most durable decoration method available for active, frequently washed garments, definitely choose sublimation printing services.
What's the minimum order for sublimation printing?
Minimums for sublimation vary depending on the garment style and production method. Custom sublimated uniforms and jerseys typically have a minimum of 12 pieces per design. For all-over print blanks run through our standard sublimation process, minimums may vary. Contact us with your project details for an accurate quote.
Because sublimation setups have require different printing methods other than screen printing, we'll work through the details with you to find the right quantity and price point.
Can I add player names and numbers to sublimated uniforms?
Yes, this is another one of sublimation's advantages for custom team jerseys and uniforms. Player names, numbers, and individual customization can be designed into the sublimation print, with no additional heat-pressed letters or decals required. Every jersey can be individually customized within the same production run.
This produces a cleaner, more professional look than applied numbers and lasts longer through athletic use. If you're outfitting a team and want all customization done in one step, sublimation is the way to go.
How long does sublimation take?
Custom sublimation orders typically take 10–14 business days from artwork approval, depending on garment style and order complexity. Full custom uniform programs with individual player customization may take longer.
Can sublimation be done on hard goods, not just fabric?
Yes. Sublimation also works on polymer-coated hard goods like coffee mugs, tumblers, phone cases, plaques, keychains, coasters, tiles, and more. As long as they have a polyester or polymer coating that accepts the dye transfer. Sublimation will work!
