Answers to common laser engraving questions:

What materials can you laser engrave?

We engrave a wide range of materials using USA-made Epilog laser systems: wood, leather, acrylic, glass, metal, coated metals, anodized aluminum, plastics, rubber, cork, slate, and more. If you have a material you're not sure about, contact us and we'll test it.

Epilog lasers are the industry gold standard for precision engraving. Our equipment produces clean, detailed results on materials that lower-end machines can't handle consistently.

What kinds of products can be laser engraved?

Almost anything flat or cylindrical that fits the engraving area. Common applications include: drinkware (tumblers, mugs, flasks), cutting boards, plaques, awards, wine bottles, leather goods, acrylic signage, wooden gifts, notebooks, phone cases, coasters, and more.

We also engrave custom corporate gift packages and awards for businesses, teams, and events throughout East Tennessee. If you need a branded gift set for a company event or recognition program, laser engraving is a premium, lasting way to put your brand on it.

How precise is laser engraving?

Epilog laser systems deliver engraving precision at the thousandths-of-an-inch level — capable of reproducing fine detail, small text, and complex vector artwork with clean, sharp edges. The quality is visibly superior to rotary engraving and most other marking methods.

If your design includes fine lines, small text, or intricate detail, laser engraving handles it well. We'll always review your file before running production to confirm the design will translate cleanly at your desired size.

What file format should I submit for laser engraving?

Vector files work best. AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF from Adobe Illustrator. Vector artwork scales without loss of quality and gives the laser precise line paths to follow.

For engraving photos or raster artwork, we can work with high-resolution PNG or JPG files, though the result will vary by material and design complexity. Photographic engraving (also called raster engraving) is possible on certain materials like wood and leather. Talk to us about what you're trying to achieve and we'll advise on the best approach.

Can laser engraving be done on items I provide?

Yes. Customer-supplied items are welcome in many cases. If you have drinkware, awards, gifts, or other products you've already purchased, bring them in and we can engrave them. Contact us first to confirm your item is compatible because not all materials engrave well, and some coatings or finishes can produce unpredictable results.

We do have a large inventory of blank drinkware, awards, and gifts available if you'd prefer to source through us.

Is laser engraving permanent?

Yes. Laser engraving removes or alters the surface of the material. It's not a coating or sticker, it's a physical mark in the material itself. That means it won't peel, fade, scratch off, or wash out. Engraved drinkware can go through thousands of dishwasher cycles and the mark stays.

This permanence is exactly why laser engraving is the preferred choice for awards, recognition gifts, and high-value branded items where durability matters.

What's the minimum order for laser engraving?

No minimum order required. Custom laser engraving is popular for one-of-a-kind personalized gifts, individual awards, and sample pieces. That said, per-piece setup costs are amortized over larger orders, so volume orders reduce your per-unit cost. Request a quote with your quantity and we'll give you a full breakdown.

Can you engrave color into materials?

Traditional laser engraving produces a natural, uncolored mark. The color comes from the contrast between the engraved area and the original material surface (e.g., the light wood grain exposed under a dark wood finish, or a bright metal surface under a painted coating).

For products like anodized aluminum, the engraving removes the anodized layer to reveal the bright metal beneath, naturally creating high-contrast results. We don't typically fill engraved areas with color, but if that's something you need, contact us and we'll discuss options.

How long does laser engraving take?

Turnaround depends on the quantity and complexity of the order. Single pieces and small batches can often turn around in 2–5 business days. Larger orders or complex designs take longer. Contact us with your quantity and deadline and we'll give you an honest timeline.

We're based in Alcoa, TN and serve clients across Knoxville, Maryville, Oak Ridge, and East Tennessee. Local customers can arrange pickup.

What's the difference between laser engraving and laser cutting?

Engraving marks the surface of a material by removing or altering it to create a design without cutting all the way through. Cutting uses the laser at full power to cut completely through a material along a path. This is ideal for custom acrylic shapes, wooden cutouts, and intricate designs in sheet materials.

We offer both services. If you need custom-cut acrylic signs, shaped wood pieces, or other laser-cut components for your project, let us know and we'll quote it. Contact us with what you're trying to build.
