Answers to common Direct-To-Film questions

What is DTF printing?

DTF stands for Direct to Film printing. The process involves printing your design onto a special PET film using water-based inks, applying a hot-melt adhesive powder, curing it, and then heat-pressing the finished transfer onto your garment. The result is a full-color, soft-hand print that adheres directly to the fabric. DTF is one of the most versatile decoration methods available today. It works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, denim, and more, without any pretreatment. If you've struggled to find a printing method that works for a specific fabric type, DTF is often the answer.

How is DTF printing different from screen printing and DTG?

Screen printing uses ink pushed through mesh screens — it's ideal for high-quantity orders with limited colors (24+ pieces). DTG (Direct to Garment) prints ink directly into cotton fabric fibers. This is a great option for photographic designs in small quantities but limited to high-cotton garments. DTF prints onto film and is heat-transferred. It works on nearly any fabric, in any quantity, with no minimum, and produces vibrant, full-color results.

For small-batch, full-color orders on mixed fabric types, DTF is often the best option in our shop. Our team will always recommend the right method for your project.

What's the minimum order for DTF printing?

DTF has no hard minimum. We can produce a single custom transfer if that's what you need. This makes it ideal for one-off pieces, small team orders, or sample runs before committing to a larger quantity.

That said, pricing per piece does improve with volume. If you're ordering 24+ pieces, it's worth comparing DTF vs. screen printing quotes to find the best value for your specific design and fabric.

What colors are available with DTF printing?

DTF printing is full CMYK color which means we can reproduce virtually any color in your
design, including gradients, photographic images, and complex multi-color artwork. There's no color separation or per-color fee like screen printing.

This makes DTF the right call for designs with gradients, detailed illustrations, photographic elements, or artwork with more colors than screen printing can efficiently handle.

What file format should I submit for DTF printing?

We prefer PNG files with a transparent background, or AI/PDF vector files. High-resolution files (300 DPI at print size) produce the sharpest results. Because DTF supports full color, there’s no need to separate the colors on your art.

If your file has a white background instead of transparent, let us know and our team can help prep it. White in DTF printing is printed as an ink color and needs to be handled correctly for the design to look right on the garment.

How durable is DTF printing? Will it crack or peel?

DTF transfers, when applied correctly, are extremely durable. The adhesive bonds firmly to fabric fibers, and the print holds up through repeated washing without cracking, peeling, or significant fading. We recommend washing DTF-printed garments inside out in cold water and tumble drying on low.

At GoTeez, we use premium DTF inks and a precision curing process on every transfer. If
you've had poor experiences with DTF transfers from other vendors like lifting edges or cracked prints, the issue is usually in the application process.

Can DTF transfers be applied to any color garment?

Yes. Unlike DTG printing (which performs best on white or light-colored cotton), DTF transfers include an opaque white underbase built into the transfer itself. This allows the design to print vividly on dark, bright, and multicolored garments alike. Black shirt, navy hoodie, camo jacket.

DTF handles them all without compromising color accuracy.

Can I buy just the transfers without having GoTeez apply them?

Yes. We produce DTF transfers that you can heat-press yourself or have applied by another vendor. This is a popular option for businesses and decorators who have their own heat press equipment and want to apply transfers to items on demand.

If you're ordering transfers only (no garments), let us know your design size and quantity and we'll quote accordingly. Contact us to get started.

How long does a DTF order take?

Standard turnaround is 5–7 business days from artwork approval for garment orders, and 3–5 business days for transfer-only orders. Rush options may be available. Contact us with your deadline and we'll let you know what's achievable.

We serve customers across Knoxville, Maryville, Alcoa, and East Tennessee. Local customers can arrange pickup to save shipping time.

What types of items can DTF prints be applied to?

DTF is extremely versatile and can be used on most standard t-shirts and hoodies. We apply DTF transfers to hats, bags, jackets, shorts, pants, socks, shoes, and more. As long as the item can withstand heat press temperatures, it's a candidate.

If you have an unusual item or application, contact us and we'll evaluate it. We'll tell you upfront if it's a good fit or if a different decoration method would perform better.
